SILENT CITY 2019
Playland Productions is thrilled to present Silent City by Dan Wilson, a modern day detective noir murder mystery featuring Deaf and hearing actors. This exciting and fun “whodunit” has twists and turns, suspicious suspects and a Deaf private eye hot on the trail to find the truth to solve her first murder case.
This bilingual play uses spoken English, ASL, Text/Captioning and ASL Interpreters. This humorous, yet socially relevant play calls attention to our pre-judgements of anyone who does not speak perfect English. Whether speaking with an accent, a speech impediment or using ASL, people are underestimated, considered incompetent and are often mocked and bullied. SILENT CITY opens a window into the culture and challenges of the Deaf and hard of hearing communities.
This innovative and creative play is designed for our marginalized and underserved Deaf, and hard of hearing audiences.
SILENT CITY is authentically cast with Deaf actors playing Deaf characters. And true to our mission of casting with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion we are proud to cast formidable Women in lead roles and prominent African American, Asian, Latinx, and LGBTQ representation. Ages from Gen X, Millennials to early Baby Boomers!
OUR BRILLIANT CAST: JAC Cook, Pam Pjay Johnson, Antoine Hunter, Deborah Cortez, Nathan Emley, Miia Ashley, Jeffrey Kimmich, Miyoko Sakatani, Terry Stokes and Richard Wenzel. ASL INTERPRETERS: Jennie O’Shaughnessy DeLeon & William Baim CO-DIRECTED BY: Pam Pjay Johnson & Miyoko Sakatani
