Playland Productions is thrilled to present the Bay Area premiere of SILENT CITY by Dan Wilson. A developmental reading for a future stage production of a modern day noir detective story. Carol Stone is a private detective who is out to solve this whodunit murder mystery. Carol Stone is deaf. Yes, stone deaf. SILENT CITY will be spoken in English and American Sign Language (ASL), voice over and text captions in some scenes.
It is a play for both Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing audiences.
Both hilarious and poignant, this innovative new play has anoverarching theme of the societal stigma, misunderstanding and judgments we carry of people who do not speak perfect English. Whether speaking with an accent, a speech impediment or using sign language, people are underestimated, considered incompetent andoften mocked and bullied. SILENT CITY opens a window into the culture and challenges of the Deaf and hard of hearing communities.
Authentically cast with Deaf actors playing Deaf characters. And true to our mission of casting with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion we are proud to cast formidable Women in lead roles and prominent African American, Asian, Latinx, and LGBTQ representation. Ages from Gen X, Millennials to early Baby Boomers!
